Abraham Lincoln was one of the most influential of all U.S. Presidents, responsible for prompting Congressional legislation to permanently abolish slavery. To celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of Lincoln, the U.S. Mint issued this gorgeous silver dollar in 2009. Struck from 0.7736 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this Silver Dollar has a diameter of 38.1 mm and weighs 26.73 grams, with a final reported mintage of 375,000.
Inspirational Words of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
The final forty-three words of the Gettysburg Address appear on the reverse, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The distinctive design by Phebe Hemphill includes the additional inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “ONE DOLLAR”, with the replica signature of Abraham Lincoln on a banner below.
The obverse features a portrait of Lincoln modeled after Daniel Chester French’s 1915 sculpture of Lincoln located at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. The composition created by Justin Kunz and Don Everhart is accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “2009,” “P” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
