Most orders go through without it. On a small number — usually larger purchases, or ones where our checks flag something unusual — we ask for a one-time identity check. Precious metals are a frequent target for stolen cards, and verifying protects both you and us. It isn’t a judgment about you or your order.
You’ll be handed off to our verification partner, where you photograph a government-issued ID and take a quick selfie. It usually takes two or three minutes, and you’ll have about 10 minutes to finish.
Your ID and selfie images stay with that partner — they never reach us. What we keep is the outcome and the date, so you aren’t asked again. Once you’re verified, you won’t be asked again for about a year, however many orders you place.
You’ll never be left paying for an order we don’t complete, and in most cases your price is held while you verify. What happens depends on how far along you were:
- If your order was placed — your total is locked in at the price you saw, and nothing is charged until you’ve verified. Finish the check and we’ll take you straight to payment at that same total. If you don’t finish in time the order is cancelled and nothing is taken. Metals prices move constantly, so we can’t hold a price open-ended.
- If we asked before your order was placed — this can happen when you pay with PayPal, where we check before handing you over. Nothing has been charged and no order exists yet, so there’s no price to hold. Verify, then place your order; because our prices follow the live metals market, your total will reflect the market at that moment.
- After payment has been taken — occasionally we ask during a review of an order we’ve already charged. Your price is locked and your order is simply on hold while we sort it out. If verification isn’t completed or doesn’t pass, we refund you in full.
Yes. Verification is tied to your customer account, which is what lets it carry over to future orders instead of repeating each time. On larger orders we’ll ask you to create an account at checkout rather than checking out as a guest. If you’ve already placed a guest order that needs verification, we’ll walk you through creating one on the same email address.
Get in touch and we’ll sort it out by hand — a failed check is usually something ordinary like a blurry photo or an expired ID. Occasionally a check comes back inconclusive rather than pass or fail; if that happens we review it ourselves and email you, and nothing is charged in the meantime. We can also arrange another way to pay.
We keep what we need to fill your order and meet our legal and tax obligations: your contact and delivery details, your order history, and a record of how you paid. Where an order went through an identity check or fraud screening, we keep the outcome and the date — not the documents.
Order records are held while a payment could still be disputed or charged back, which for card and PayPal orders is about 18 months from the payment. Orders paid in cash or by check at pickup have no such window. After that, we can remove the personal details from those records on request.
Email privacy@jcsgold.com and tell us what you’d like — a copy of what we hold, deletion, or both. Please write from the email address your orders were placed under, or tell us which address to look for, so we can be confident we’re acting for the right person. We’ll confirm by email before we do anything that can’t be undone.
A few things worth knowing:
- Some records can’t be deleted straight away. We have to keep order and payment records while a payment could still be disputed, and for as long as tax rules require. We’ll remove what we can immediately and tell you plainly what’s being held back and until when.
- We pass the request on for you. If your order was checked by our identity-verification or fraud-screening partners, we ask them to delete their copy as well, and we’ll tell you which were involved. You don’t need to contact them yourself.
- We keep a minimal record that a check happened. Where we’ve verified an identity or screened an order, we keep the outcome and date even after deletion. That’s what stops the same fraud being run against us again, and it holds no documents or images.
- We can take you off our mailing list at the same time. Just say so in the same email.
Removing an account on its own wouldn’t touch your order history, so we handle deletion as a request instead of a button — that way you get told exactly what was removed and what had to be kept, rather than being left to guess. Email privacy@jcsgold.com and we’ll take care of it.
