2006-S San Francisco Old Mint Proof Silver Dollar.

Released in 2006, this commemorative coin honors the San Francisco Mint on the 100th anniversary of one of the greatest natural disasters in American history, the devastating 1906 San Francisco Earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people and destroyed around 80% of the city. Amid the smoking ruins left by the cataclysmic catastrophe stood the Old San Francisco Mint. Not only had the Mint survived, but it was the only financial building to withstand the effects of the earthquake and resulting fire. It was a good thing, too, because at that time the San Francisco Mint held more than $300 million in gold — a third of all the nation’s gold reserves! Built on a granite foundation, the Mint was soon nicknamed “The Granite Lady” in admiration for its solid construction.
